There appears to be an issue with using the new Apple 24" Cinema Displays with integrated USB audio, VM Ware and virtual machines.

When the display is plugged into a Mac Book Pro notebook, via USB, normally Mac OS will see the external UBS audio and switch to it from the notebook speakers. If you look in Mac OS System Preferences>Output, Internal Speakers and USB Speakers are shown. But, when VM Ware is running, and Windows Vista is running as the guest OS in the virtual machine, the Virtual Machine takes over the USB audio for Windows Vista, and is unavailable to Mac OS X. In this scenario, when looking in Mac OS System Preferences>Sound>Output, only the Internal Speaker for the notebook show up, and when in Mac OS, the audio is coming from the notebook computer, but when audio is playing from Windows Vista, it is coming from the Apple Display. Any Clues???

Setting the boot delay did allow me to access the boot menu and although I set the CD drive to the first boot device and had it "connect at power on" and had it set to use the host device all I get is the PXE boot. I am able to use the CD drive on the client device, but since my client device is across a network from the ESXi host system (and my laptop/client device has a relatively slow CD drive) this isn't the most efficient means of installing an OS. I also tried setting the CD drive to "Emulate IDE" and "Passthrough IDE" which are the only possible choices in that area.

The CD drive on the host does work since that is how I installed ESXi.

Seeing as there aren't that many possible CD configuration possibilities (and I think I've tried all variations anyways) it seems that I don't have the ability to install an OS in a ESXi vm any way except using the drive on my client device. It shouldn't be this difficult.

Sounds like a lot of work however on my Production Virtual Machines that I may have spent 24 ~ 40 hours building out originally I'm not about to
not be absolutely sure I can restore that work when need be and without any issue.
Hi one3cap, to answer your questions individually:

1) Your VCB proxy needs enough space to hold the VMs only if you are doing image-level backups. File-level backups do not have any disk space requirement on the proxy.

2) Yes, the proxy does need to be connected to your SAN and have access to the VMFS LUNs if you want to perform LAN-free backups. You could use VCB to back up through the Service Console, which wouldn't require SAN connectivity, but this would not be "LAN-free", which is a major selling point of VCB.

3) The article you reference does detail most of the set up. The VCB integration with BackupExec is purely script-based and isn't that feature-rich. There is a new add-on that Symantec sells for BE 12.5 that is much more comprehensive, but it is also a bit more expensive.

Please help me out by awarding points for a "helpful" or "correct" response if you feel that it was useful!

-Amit

FWIW Time Machine may not be reliable in the Backup/Restore of Virtual Machines and while YMMV many Users have reported TM didn't Backup/Restore their Virtual Machines properly.

Also I never allow Windows Automatic Updates to do anything more then notify me that Updates are available and then before running Windows Update I create a Restore Point in Windows then shutdown the Virtual Machine and take a Snapshot. Then boot Windows and run Windows Update and afterwards if all is okay then I delete the Snapshot and or I have a current full backup that was not created in TM to restore from if something go wrong. Then it just doesn't matter what happens I don't have to employ all the other standard Windows troubleshooting/recovery measures which can certainly be more time consuming and ultimately end up with having to clean build a new Virtual Machine if a clean backup isn't available.

So you need to employ all standard Windows troubleshooting/recovery measures as this is most likely not Fusion related.

Also there are USB ports that carry over to the vm's

These new vm's are one way procs..... do i need to change device manger to uniprocessor. Should I change my disk from bus logic to lsi logic? Should I remove the USB ports?

Any common practice or recommended post P2V task would be helpful. Jeff, you can run them together. Best practice is to lock it down but most people don't, if you are a small shop and all your IT people have access to everything you can do a risk assessment and go for it. Technically, there is no problem. Of course you also have the issues of dependency, might you want to reboot one without taking out the other? Probably not, but these are the things to consider.

Rodos
Consider the use of the helpful or correct buttons to award points.
Blog:http://rodos.haywood.org/
I think that it's working as designed. I always prefer to work in terms of examples.....

Let's say you have an HA cluster with ESX1, ESX2 and ESX3 as member hosts. Then, let's say ESX1 hosts VM1 and VM2 on it, ESX2 hosts VM3 and VM4 on it, and ESX3 hosts VM5 and VM6 on it. If ESX1 becomes isolated, let's say that the isolation response on both VM1 and VM2 is set to "power off". Those VMs are powered off, and once ESX2 and ESX3 realize that ESX1 is no longer alive, they will attempt to power on VM1 and VM2 according to their resource availability. If ESX2 and ESX3 only have enough resources (RAM and CPU) to power on VM1, VM2 will not get powered on automatically, even if ESX1 eventually comes back (HA uses priority and then alphabetical order to determine the order of VM restoration). This might be what's happening to your VM.

Please help me out by awarding points for a "helpful" or "correct" response if you feel that it was useful!

-Amit
